New providers - August 2019

The following providers joined WVU Medicine in August:

BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE AND PSYCHIATRY

Joel Vogt, MD, joins the Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry. He was formerly an assistant professor of psychiatry at WVU, as well as chief of psychiatry and of community mental health and recovery at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center. He has held leadership positions in psychiatry at Moses Cone in Greensboro, North Carolina; Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Massachusetts; and Fairmont Regional Medical in Fairmont, West Virginia.

COMMUNITY PRACTICE

Alan Casciola, DO, joins the Department of Community Practice at the WVU Medicine clinic in Waynesburg. He was formerly with Waynesburg Legacy Medical. He earned his degree at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.

EMERGENCY MEDICINE

Brian Dilcher, MD, joins the faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine having completed his emergency medicine residency at WVU.

Anthony Steratore, MD, joins the faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine. He completed his emergency medicine residency at WVU.

FAMILY MEDICINE

James Mersing, MD, joins the Department of Family Medicine. His previous practice was with Wedgewood Family Practice in Morgantown. He completed a family medicine residency and earned his medical degree at WVU.

HEART AND VASCULAR INSTITUTE

Brijesh Patel, DO, joins the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute providing non-invasive cardiology services at Garrett Regional Medical Center. He was a non-invasive cardiologist at Michigan Heart and Henry Ford Allegiance Hospital in Jackson, Michigan, and a clinical assistant professor at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.  

Alper Toker, MD, joins the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute as director of tracheal reconstruction for the division of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. He led the chest surgery program at the Istanbul University Medical School’s Department of General Thoracic Surgery and was the director of the chest surgery program at the Group Florence Nightingale Hospitals in Istanbul.

MEDICINE

Nour Daboul, MD, joins the hematology/oncology division in the Department of Medicine and the WVU Cancer Institute. She completed a hematology/oncology fellowship at Allegheny Health Network and specializes in genitourinary oncology.

Jamie Latos, DO, joins the rheumatology division in the Department of Medicine. He completed a rheumatology fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina and internal medicine residency at WVU.

Sowmini Medavaram, MD, joins the hematology/oncology division in the Department of Medicine and WVU Cancer Institute. Dr. Medavaram will practice at Berkeley Medical Center. She completed a hematology/oncology fellowship at Stony Brook University Hospital.

Samuel Merrill, MD, PhD, joins the hematology/oncology division in the Department of Medicine and WVU Cancer Institute. He is a former attending hematologist at Johns Hopkins University. His research focus is on severe anemias.

NEUROLOGY

Melanie Ward, MD, joins the neuroimmunology service in the Department of Neurology. She was formerly a neurologist at Charleston Area Medical Center. She completed a neuroimmunology fellowship and neurology residency at the University of Virginia.  

OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY

Laura Merrill, MD, joins the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She practiced at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland, and at Johns Hopkins University. 

Kayla Pomp-Steurer, CNM, joins the midwifery section in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She will practice at the WVU Medicine outpatient center in Fairmont and at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was a registered nurse at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital prior to earning her certified nurse midwife degree.

PATHOLOGY

Aarti Gosawmi, MD, joins the Department of Pathology. She completed a cytopathology fellowship at the University of Minnesota.

RADIOLOGY

Parissa Feizi, MD, joins the Department of Radiology. She completed a neuroradiology fellowship at the University of Maryland and a radiology residency at WVU.

SURGERY

Amanda Palmer, MD, joins the trauma, acute care surgery, and surgical critical care division in the Department of Surgery. She completed a surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Kentucky and a general surgery residency at WVU.

Dan Parrish, MD, joins the pediatric surgery division in the Department of Surgery. He completed a pediatric surgery fellowship at the University of Mississippi.
