Ophthalmologist Dr. Lee Wiley to retire after more than two decades at the WVU Eye Institute

Ophthalmologist and Associate Professor Lee Wiley, M.D., will be retiring on June 30, following more than 20 years of working at the West Virginia University Eye Institute.

Dr. Wiley began working at the Eye Institute in 2000, before the department moved into the then newly constructed WVU Eye Institute. He said being able to play a role in the Eye Institute’s incredible expansion over the past two decades has been one of the greatest honors of his career.

“I’ve witnessed the Eye Institute grow into a wonderful resource for the people of West Virginia, which is something I am grateful for and will always be proud of,” Wiley said.

Throughout his tenure, Wiley has served as the head of the Cornea and External Disease Division and as the Interim Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. He said a special responsibility he has had in his career has been providing surgical coverage for local veterans at the Louis A. Johnson Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center in Clarksburg.

In addition to those roles, Wiley worked closely with residents and fellows and said that watching them train and grow has been able to keep him innovating and never stop learning himself.

Wiley praised the support system within both the School of Medicine and the hospital, saying both institutions have provided him with unwavering support for his practice and surgical efforts. He noted his requests for the latest and greatest equipment were always listened to and helped ensure that the Eye Institute was always providing the best care possible for all its patients.

“Dr. Wiley possesses every quality that an exceptional ophthalmologist should have,” said Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Chairman Thomas Mauger, M.D. “He has been a valued member of our team for more than 20 years, and has dedicated himself to always providing our patients with the best care possible.”

Wiley said he would like to thank all of the incredible people he has had the opportunity to work with at WVU who have allowed him to achieve his best, and all of his patients throughout the years who have put their trust in him.
