Ruby 3rd floor connector access to HSC limited after steam line burst

On Sunday morning (May 26), a steam line burst on the third-floor connector to the Health Sciences Center (HSC). There was significant, non-structural damage to the area and several nearby departments, but no injuries. Flooding also occurred on the second floor in areas immediately below the incident site on level three.

Crews worked around the clock to remediate the damage the burst steam line caused, making significant progress to restore clinical operations to a normal, or mostly normal state. Some labs and affected areas are operating at a limited capacity.

Plans remain in place to allow limited traffic through the HSC-Ruby connector after barriers are erected that will isolate construction crews from pedestrian traffic. All employees and students who routinely use the connector for the purpose of moving from Ruby to the Health Sciences Center, or vice versa, should find alternative walking routes and avoid the area to help ease congestion and foot traffic. Priority must go to patient-related traffic.

Anyone in the vicinity of the steam line when it burst should not hesitate to visit or contact WVU Medicine Employee Health on the second floor of Ruby with any health-related concerns. The number for Employee Health is 304-598-4160.

Emergency facilities issues should be directed to HSC facilities at 304-293-4115.
