Sophomores officially enter the study of nursing during Fall Pledge Ceremony

Across three campus locations of the WVU School of Nursing, sophomores formally entered the study of nursing during the Fall 2025 Pledge Ceremony.

The nursing pledge is a commitment to demonstrate and respect the moral principles of the nursing profession. Specifically, the WVU School of Nursing Pledge speaks to integrity, compassion, ethics, patient advocacy and lifelong learning.

The Beckley Campus (pictured first above) event was held Oct. 2 at the Calvary Assembly of God; the Keyser Campus (pictured second above) event was held Oct. 7 at the Davis Conference Center; and the Morgantown Campus event was held Oct. 17 in the Okey Patteson Auditorium. At Morgantown, members of the International Nursing Program were also part of the ceremony.

Chailyn Perdue, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing student at Beckley, said she has always wanted to pursue a career that would allow her to be proud of her work.

“Nursing is so much more than just a job, it’s a role of trust and respect,” said Perdue, of Oak Hill. “Holding the title of a nurse will allow my patients and their families to rely on me during some of their most vulnerable moments.”

Peyton Duncan-Wolford, a BSN student at Keyser, said she was inspired to pursue nursing after her brother suffered a traumatic brain injury. The nurses not only supported his recovery but supported her family as well, she said.

“I am so grateful for my husband, family, friends, and professors on this journey,” said Duncan-Wolford, of Romney. “The care my brother received continues to inspire me, and I hope to carry that same compassion into my own nursing career.”

Laicey Necessary, a BSN student at Morgantown, said she sees the Pledge Ceremony as a rite of passage in nursing school, “marking the beginning of a lifelong journey to uphold the responsibility of helping those in need.”

Necessary, of Princeton, aspires to work in the emergency department at WVU Medicine J. W. Ruby Memorial Hospital after graduation.

“Since beginning my career in emergency medicine, I am nothing short of fascinated and unconditionally dedicated to a fast-paced environment where teamwork and emergent actions can save lives,” Necessary said.
