A team from WVU Potomac State College University Police recently provided Stop the Bleed training for the WVU School of Nursing Keyser Campus.

Captain Chad Barker, Chief of Police for WVU Potomac State College, and Lieutenant Brock Armstrong, Training Coordinator for WVU Police, offered the training for Keyser Campus students, faculty and staff.

The training underscores the time sensitive nature of emergencies involving bleeding. According to the Stop the Bleed training site, “Someone who is severely bleeding can bleed to death in as little as 5 minutes.” Attendees at the training learn how to provide bleeding control or keeping the blood inside the body.

During the training, students practiced the steps of pressure and packing on simulated leg wounds. They then learned proper tourniquet placement and use.

Sophomore Allyson Young and junior Madison Moyers practice their newly learned skills on manikin "Tom."

“I completed the training with them,” shared Dr. April Shapiro, Keyser Campus Chair. “It was a great experience to enhance students' learning about life-saving measures related to bleeding and to reinforce to them how important their timely intervention is to promote positive patient outcomes.”
