WVU Department of Medicine names Sengupta first Abnash C. Jain Chair of Cardiology

Partho Sengupta, M.D., director of Cardiovascular Imaging and chair of the Center for Innovation as well as chief of the Division of Cardiology in the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute, has been named the Abnash C. Jain  Chair of Cardiology.

Dr. Sengupta was officially presented with his chair during an investiture ceremony at the WVU Health Sciences Center on Friday, June 14.

“The commitment of the University and WVU Medicine towards service, education and scholarship is palpable and gives me confidence for continued success of our cardiology program,” Sengupta said. “Creating knowledge, creates value and respect -- and an investment of this nature fosters innovation and creativity. While serving the health needs of the rural community in West Virginia, my goal is that that we become the test bed of innovation for creative pursuits in technology-enabled care.

Sengupta’s clinical contributions, investigative skills and international work are acclaimed by national and international societies. His vision for innovation is complimented by the opportunities provided through the chair fund.

The Abnash C. Jain, M.D., Chair of Cardiology honors Dr. Jain, who currently serves as a professor in the Department of Medicine.

While attending the event, Dr. Jain emphasized that Dr. Sengupta’s focus on preventative care is at the heart of the mission of the University where he has served for nearly 45 years.

“We need to continue to develop and emphasize preventive medicine to improve the health of our state,” Jain said. “We know that prevention is better than a cure and I’m confident that Dr. Sengupta will continue to lead this charge to help keep West Virginians well through education and care.”

Sengupta joined the School of Medicine in 2016. He is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease and Internal Medicine and is a Diplomate on the National Board of Echocardiography.

He earned his medical degree from Government Medical College in 1993, before completing a residency at the Government Medical College Hospitals. He then completed fellowships through the Mayo Clinic.
