WVU Department of Otolaryngology Welcomes Dr. Johnathan E. Castano, MD

Johnathan Edward Castaño, MD is a pediatric otolaryngologist and Assistant Professor in the West Virginia University Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. While he enjoys all aspects of general otolaryngology as it pertains to neonates, infants, children, teenagers and young adults, he has particular interest and expertise in pediatric otologic surgery (including pediatric cochlear implantation, tympanomastoid surgery for chronic otitis media and cholesteatoma, minimally invasive endoscopic middle ear surgery, and the evaluation and management of hearing loss in children), along with pediatric endoscopic sinus surgery, and both endoscopic and open airway surgery for treatment of congenital and acquired pediatric airway disorders such as laryngomalacia, laryngotracheal stenosis and laryngeal clefts.

Dr. Castaño is board-certified in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He is a South Florida native and attended the University of Miami for his undergraduate studies where he graduated with Cum laude honors and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He remained in Miami for medical school, earning his medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honors society and participated in a yearly medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic. He completed his residency training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at West Virginia University in Morgantown. He subsequently completed a one-year clinical fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, the oldest and one of the most prestigious Pediatric Otolaryngology fellowships in the country. While in fellowship, he further refined his skills in pediatric otologic surgery, pediatric cochlear implantation, and pediatric airway surgery and is excited to bring these skills back to WVU.

Dr. Castaño is a member of multiple professional organizations including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy. He is proud to be a fellow member of the American Society for Pediatric Otolaryngology. He is the author of multiple journal articles and has presented at national meetings.

Dr. Castaño’s research interests lie in the study of hearing loss in children, middle ear disease, chronic otitis media in children with craniofacial disorders, pediatric bone anchored implants, pediatric cochlear implantation, pediatric airway disorders, pediatric sinonasal disease, pediatric obstructive sleep apnea, surgical simulation, emergency airway management simulation, and 3D printing in otolaryngology.

Dr. Castaño’s areas of clinical interest include resident and medical student education, management of hearing loss in children; hearing implants in children (cochlear implants, ossicular chain reconstruction, and bone conduction implants); minimally invasive endoscopic middle ear surgery; medical and surgical management of Eustachian tube dysfunction as well as acute and chronic otitis media in children; repair of tympanic membrane perforations; tympanomastoid surgery for cholesteatoma; surgical correction of protruding ears (otoplasty); pediatric laryngology and bronchoesophagology; pediatric tracheotomy; endoscopic and open airway surgery for management of laryngomalacia, laryngotracheal stenosis, laryngeal clefts and other congenital airway anomalies; EX-utero Intrapartum Therapy (EXIT) procedures for management of life-threatening congenital airway obstruction; management of complex sinonasal disease in children, including advanced techniques in endoscopic sinus surgery (such as endoscopic modified medial maxillectomy) for children with cystic fibrosis, as well as revision functional endoscopic sinus surgery; surgery for repair of congenital nasal anomalies such as pyriform aperture stenosis, and choanal atresia; surgical treatment of obstructive sleep apnea in children; pediatric thyroid surgery; management of pediatric aerodigestive tract foreign bodies; management of pediatric congenital head and neck anomalies such as neck cysts and masses; multidisciplinary management of pediatric lymphatic and vascular malformations; and multidisciplinary management of children with Pierre Robin Sequence and other craniofacial anomalies.
