WVU Medicine Children’s ECMO Team receives national recognition

A multi-disciplinary team of West Virginia University School of Medicine faculty and WVU Medicine experts who coordinate the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for WVU Medicine Children’s recently were awarded the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization’s silver-level award.

The award was presented at the 34th Annual ELSO Meeting in Seattle, Washington on Sept. 30. ELSO is the world’s premier organization for the advancement of extracorporeal life support.

WVU Medicine Children’s has maintained the only neonatal and pediatric ECMO program in the state of West Virginia since the program’s origination in 2014. This was WVU Children’s ECMO team’s first award from ELSO.

The WVU Children’s ECMO team is led by Surgical Director Christopher Mascio, M.D.; Associate Surgical Director Dhaval Chauhan, M.D.; Medical Director Frank Casey, M.D.; Associate Medical Director Margaret Mathewson, M.D.; Medical Director of Children’s Heart Center Jai Udassi, M.D.; Pediatric ECMO Coordinator Mike Anselmi, CCP; and Director of Pediatric Perfusion Sean Lavelle, CCP.
