WVU Medicine hires chief nursing informatics officer

Rebecca Mitchell-Perry recently joined WVU Medicine as Chief Nursing Informatics Officer (CNIO), a newly created WVU Health System position.

She joins the enterprise from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), where she was director of clinical and operational informatics. She began her nursing career in Pittsburgh and has more than 17 years of informatics experience.

Mitchell-Perry's primary office location will be at the Information Technology Center in Morgantown, but she will travel across the Health System to meet with local leaders as needed.

She was quoted in a recent article in Becker’s Healthcare about the evolution of the CNIO role.

“The focus of the role is no longer just about implementing and maintaining the electronic medical record,” she said. “In addition to this, it is about being at the table and being a key partner with executive leadership in the delivery of high-quality patient care initiatives.

“Innovation is on a steady and fast-paced roll. CNIOs of today have to ensure that there is a governance model in place to ensure that requests for new technology and enhancements are supported by evidence-based data and practice to positively impact clinician workflow, safety and outcomes rather than hindering them.”
