WVU offers free reading, spelling and writing camps this summer for area youths

The Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders within the West Virginia University School of Medicine will be offering no-cost therapeutic summer camps to help elementary-aged children with reading, spelling and writing.

The camps will be offered in four-week sessions in June and July. Children can only attend one four-week session.

Session 1: June 2 - 27

Session 2: July 7 - 28

Each session meets Monday through Wednesday, from 1- 3 p.m.

Any child who is a West Virginia resident entering first through fourth grade is eligible for the camp.

Camps take place at WVU’s Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic at the Applied Human Sciences building on the Evansdale Campus in Morgantown. The address is 375 Birch Street, Morgantown, West Virginia.

Children will be evaluated free of charge at the clinic to determine their language skills and then placed into small groups for instruction. Each week’s camp programming will be structured to enhance the child’s language skills. Lessons will not be made up if children cannot attend a week of camp.

Graduate student clinicians training to be speech-language pathologists will be providing all therapy. Assistant Professor Tracy Toman, CCC-SLP, will oversee the student clinicians during the camp sessions.

The summer camps are provided at no cost through the Scottish Rite RiteCare Childhood Language Program, a nationwide network of centers and clinics dedicated to providing early intervention and treatment services to children with communication disorders.
