WVU School of Medicine announces Spring 2023 GHHS inductees, Edmond serves as keynote

The West Virginia University School of Medicine has announced the Spring 2023 inductees for the Gold Humanism Honors Society.

GHHS is a national honor society that honors senior medical students, residents, role-model physician teachers and other exemplars recognized for demonstrated excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion and dedication to service. It was founded by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation for Humanism in Medicine, which champions compassionate, collaborative and scientifically excellent care.

WVU’s chapter was established in 2008 by six faculty members with histories of exceptional service to the school and West Virginia as a whole – a mission they continue to emphasize with each new cohort.

The Spring 2023 inductees were announced during a special ceremony on Saturday, June 3, at the Health Sciences Center in Morgantown.

Michael Edmond, MD, MPH, MPA, MBA, chief medical officer for WVU Medicine and vice dean of Clinical Affairs, served as the keynote speaker for the event. Dr. Edmond spoke about the importance of the presence of humanity in medicine.

During his speech, he recounted his own experiences as a medical trainee, and provided some personal advice on how the next generation of doctors can keep humanity alive within medicine.

He said there are three distinct practices that help ground him as a practitioner and leader: noblesse oblige, gratitude and humility.

“My wish for each of you is this,” Edmond said, addressing the inductees. “That you have a long career as a doctor’s doctor, that your humanity always shines brightly, and that all the kindness you have shown to your patients returns to you a hundred-fold.”
