Christopher S. Kiefer, MD, MSEd, FACEP

Christopher Kiefer currently serves as an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at West Virginia University and has been the Associate Program Director for the emergency medicine residency program at WVU since 2014 and co-founded the Medical Education and Administration fellowship in 2022, serving as the inaugural program director. Dr. Kiefer received his medical degree at West Virginia University, and first became involved in medical education as a chief resident at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He furthered his formal education in medical education by completing a master’s degree in medical education at the University of Pennsylvania in 2022. Over the course of his career, he has diverse educational experiences in both UME and GME—having served as a clerkship site director at Indiana University, an Associate Program Director, as part of the medical school curriculum committee and its subcommittees assessing course quality and performance at WVU. He also serves as the Chief of the Division of Education and Training where he and Dr. Shaver have oversight over the medical student, residency, and fellowship programs offered at WVU EM. From an administrative standpoint, he also serves as the Chief of Staff at WVU Hospitals. His interests in medical education include delivering high quality bedside teaching, curriculum design of longitudinal learning events, and researching the residency application process.
Erica B. Shaver, MD, FACEP

Erica Shaver currently serves as a Professor of Emergency Medicine at West Virginia University and has been the Program Director for the emergency medicine residency program since 2014 and worked to co-found the Medical Education and Administration fellowship in 2022. Dr. Shaver received her medical degree at Marshall University and remained in her native West Virginia for her residency training in emergency medicine at West Virginia University. She became interested in medical education as a resident and served as an Assistant Chief and Chief Resident during her final two years and was immediately appointed as an Assistant Program Director upon graduating in 2011. Dr. Shaver quickly moved up the ranks, and was appointed Associate Program Director in 2012, and as Program Director and Vice Chair for Education in Training in the Department of Emergency Medicine. In her current roles, she leads the residency program and has joint oversight overall of the medical student and fellowship offerings in the department. She has extensive GME experience and currently serves as a member of the GMEC Task Force, leads DEI recruitment efforts for graduate medical education at WVU, and is considered by many to be one of the true educational leaders at the institution. In order to further her business, financial, and leadership skills, she is currently pursuing a Healthcare MBA at West Virginia University and will graduate in 2024. Her interests in medical education include delivering high quality bedside and outstanding didactic presentations, remediation and helping the struggling learner, recruitment, and researching the residency application process.
Anna Lama, EdD
Anna Lama currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Medical Education at West Virginia University where she also serves as the Director of Assessment for the School of Medicine. Always having been an educator, Dr. Lama first served as a middle school teacher, and then obtained her Master’s Degree and Educational Doctorate degree at the University of Pittsburgh. She is a key member of multiple medical school committees and helps lead the Curriculum Inventory Management Committee and Curricular Assessment Committee at the SOM. She leads an innovative Medical Students as Educators longitudinal course for fourth year medical students to introduce the concepts of medical education, and is an expert in qualitative educational scholarship. She interfaces with faculty from both UME and GME perspectives to ensure adequate and meaningful assessment of students, residents, and programmatic outcomes.

Our fellowship is unique from other emergency medicine based medical education fellowships in that it leverages faculty expertise from multiple disciplines to provide the fellow with a broad-based comprehensive view of medical education that spans the entire school of medicine.
