The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Interest Group is dedicated to fostering professional growth of medical students in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation through educational lectures, clinical skills workshops, and faculty mentorship.

Bylaws

ARTICLE I: ORGANIZATION

The name of this organization shall be the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Interest Group at the West Virginia University School of Medicine.

Article II: PURPOSE

The purpose of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Interest Group is to:

Provide an introduction for interested medical students into the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation through educational lectures, clinical skills workshops, and collaboration with Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation staff.

Promote the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Foster professional growth and relationships in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Serve the medical school and campus public.

ARTICLE III: MEMBERSHIP

Section 1: Eligibility

Any currently enrolled student at the West Virginia University School of Medicine is eligible for membership.

Section 2: Rights and Responsibilities

Members shall have the right to attend meetings, run for officer positions, and vote. Members are expected to attend regular meetings, participate in events and vote.

ARTICLE IV: OFFICERS

Section 1: Titles

The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Interest Group will be overseen by a faculty advisor and governed by an elected body of medical students consisting of a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. The executive board of officers shall contain no less than two members to maintain active status.

Section 2: Duties

The President: 
It is the president’s duty to coordinate meetings among officers, plan for educational events, and oversee elections. The president is the main liaison with the faculty advisor and is responsible for scheduling group meetings and coordinating speakers.

Vice President: 
It is the vice president’s duty to assist the president in his/her duties and to take over the position of presidency if the president is no longer able to fulfill their duties.



Secretary
: It is the duty of the secretary to provide minutes of officer and group meetings and to facilitate educational lectures via room coordination and logistics.



Treasurer
: It is the duty of the treasurer to manage the group funds and obtain reimbursements when appropriate for educational activities. The treasurer shall also maintain the funds of any fundraising events.

Faculty Advisor: 
It is the duty of the faculty advisor to mediate interactions with faculty members for the educational purposes of the group and to facilitate interaction and communication with the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department.

Section 3: Elections

Elections for officer positions shall be held annually at the end of each school year. The current President is responsible for notifying all eligible students via email. Applicants must submit a short essay containing their name, position of interest, why they are running for the position, and their qualifications for the position. The President will collect all applications for review no sooner than one and a half weeks after the first notification of elections. The President must distribute applications to the other executive officers for review at least 24 hours prior to vote. Each candidate will be considered by the executive board of officers and must receive a majority vote to be confirmed in their new position.

ARTICLE V: MEETINGS

Regular meetings shall be held monthly during the academic year to discuss organization goals and may include but are not limited to educational lectures, clinical skills workshops, physical medicine and rehabilitation department events, and community service events.

ARTICLE VI: COMMITTEES

The executive board may establish committees from organization membership as necessary to carry out the goals and functions of the organization.

ARTICLE VII: FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

All expenses must be approved by the executive board and adhere to financial policies set in place by the West Virginia University School of Medicine’s Student Services Office.

ARTICLE VII: AMENDMENTS

These bylaws may be amended by the executive board with at least 75% votes in favor of the change if the notice of the proposed amendments has been given at least two weeks in advance. Any approved bylaw changes must be submitted to the Student Services Office immediately.

VIII. Ethics
The organization must at all times abide by the laws, rules, and codes of the United States government, West Virginia government, West Virginia University, WVU Health Sciences, and WVU School of Medicine. The organization must at all times abide by the principles of ethics inherent to the field of medicine. The organization shall follow the principles outlined in the Mission Statement.
