About Us
The WVU Department of Radiology was established in 1960 under Harold Amory. The department was focused on clinical service and education in the early years. In 1965, the Radiologic Technology Education Program opened to train diagnostic and radiation therapy technologists. In 1972 under Orlando Gabriele’s leadership, WVU acquired ultrasound, digital subtraction angiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging.
In 1992, Dr. Mathis Frick accepted the Orlando Gabriele Chair of Radiology. Under his leadership, the first Positron Emission Tomography (PET) program in West Virginia began with a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy; research continued to grow. Clinical services have expanded also and today the department includes 24 radiologists, 2 Ph.D. scientists, and 16 residents. Research and clinical MRI & PET/CT are performed in the Center for Advanced Imaging (CAI). Diagnostic and Interventional Angiography, Nuclear Medicine, CT, Fluoroscopy, and X-ray imaging are performed in the WVU hospital part of the department.
In October of 2019, in collaboration with the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, the section of Neuroradiology became a stand-alone department. Dr. Ansaar Rai became the first chairman of the Department of Neuroradiology. The West Virginia University Neuroradiology Department is an innovative initiative and one of the first in the country. It continues the integration of neurological care, research, and education under the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute. Advanced neuroimaging services offered by the department underpin all facets of clinical and academic neurosciences – from early diagnosis to neuroimaging guided brain therapies for a wide range of functional and cognitive disorders.
WVU Radiology is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging and performing research that will enhance the detection and treatment of disease.
