Graduation
As students approach completion of their degree, they must apply for graduation and be certified during the term in which they intend to graduate. Information about this process is available via the Office of the University Registrar website.
Questions about the graduation application or the certification process that follows can be directed to the School of Medicine Health Professions advising team via email.
Commencement FAQs
Once students are certified for graduation, they can find current information on commencement ceremonies on the WVU Graduation website. A few common FAQs are highlighted below!

The School of Medicine ceremony will be held on Friday, May 16th at 4:00 PM. The ceremony will last approximately 2 hours. Tickets are not required for graduates or guests.
Where will the ceremony be held? As the graduate, where should I go to check in for the ceremony? And where should my guests enter?
All commencement ceremonies are held in the WVU Coliseum. All registered graduates should check-in at the Basketball Practice Facility 60 minutes prior to the ceremony time. No one other than the graduate will be permitted into the check-in area.
Guests may enter through any of the gates at the Coliseum. Doors will open one hour prior to ceremony start time.
Where can I (and my guests) find parking?
Free parking is available at the Coliseum and overflow parking will be available at the Canady Creative Arts Center. There will be parking staff and University Police officers stationed to help direct you to the nearest parking area.
Accessible parking is available for guests who require it. Handicap placard should be visible upon entry to help parking staff direct you to the designated accessible parking area. More parking information can be found on the WVU Parking Map. Shuttles will be available from parking lots to ceremony location.
What should I wear?
Graduates are required to wear caps and gowns which can be purchased online from Herff Jones or in person from the WVU Bookstore.
All graduates who have earned hoods will be hooded. Hoods will be carried in, draped over the left arm. Hooders should process in and sit with the graduate they are hooding. Faculty are required to wear regalia to participate.
Latin honor cords will be distributed by individual colleges prior to graduation day.
When will I receive my diploma?
Diplomas will be mailed after all grades are finalized and certified by the WVU Office of the Registrar.
Will photographs of the ceremony be available?
WVU has contracted with GradImages to provide quality graduation photos of each student. Proofs will be emailed to the student within 48 hours of the ceremony.
Can I have a relative, faculty mentor, or other significant individual in my life hood me during the ceremony?
Master's and doctoral degree candidates may request a specific individual to hood them during the ceremony, following the guidelines established in the School of Medicine Health Professions Guest Hooder Policy for Investiture. Interested candidates may submit an official request via the linked form.
