Mission Statement
The mission of the West Virginia University Department of Surgery begins with improving the health of the entire state of West Virginia and surrounding areas by being a leader in providing compassionate, high quality, basic and complex surgical care delivered under the auspices of high ethical principles. The Department of Surgery is dedicated to excellent patient care and a superior patient experience. The Department embraces educating the doctors and healthcare professionals of tomorrow so that the vision of improved patient care will continue for multiple future generations.
Specific Department Goals:
- Continue to develop the strongest clinical department of surgery in the region
- Continue building on the current talent by recruiting a diverse group of both clinicians and researchers into the department
- Continue to build the surgical residency program into a highly productive and sought-after training program
- Expand the residency program
- Increase academic productivity
- Continue to build the advanced endoscopic, minimally-invasive and robotic programs, including an integrated simulation curriculum that spans all 5 years of residency
- Provide basic science research for interested residents
- Cultivate an atmosphere of mutual respect, support, and utmost professionalism among all members of the department
- On-going commitment to medical student education
