Medical Student I

Goals

To provide an introduction to surgery generally, and the discipline of trauma, hand, and acute care surgery, as well as surgical intensive care specifically.

Methodology

Two sections will be offered to students interested (3 students per section maximum). Students may start on session A or B, they may do both A and B sessions. If you decide to do both, only one paper is required. The sessions will begin approximately one week after classes end. Students must attend an orientation on the first day of the externship for the participating section.

They will assume the role of observer and be included in all aspects of the daily workings of a trauma and acute care surgery team at a Level 1 referral center. The student will be issued a trauma pager. The student will be included in as much of the service as possible, with the opportunity to take call on occasion if desired. The student will have the opportunity to observe work in the trauma bay, Intensive Care Unit, and operating room.
