Surgery Oncology
Students rotating on the Surgical Oncology services will be exposed to the pre-operative work up of malignancy, participate in the operative interventions of these malignancies and be a part of the patient's post-operative care. Students will also participate in the pre-operative conference held weekly where decisions regarding the treatment plan for each operative case in the following week will be discussed among attendings and residents. Additionally, the MSIV will participate in weekly Tumor Boards for breast cancer (Mondays at noon) and the general oncology Tumor Board (Thursdays at noon). The student's operative experience will be vast - exposure to minimally invasive techniques, open abdominal surgeries and a variety of breast oncology surgeries with exposure to reconstructive techniques. There is no call required with this rotation. A small presentation on a malignancy of choice or a treatment option of choice will be encouraged.
Cancer patients are often treated in a multidisciplinary manner in which surgery, medical oncology and radiation oncology are combined together to help patients achieve the best possible outcomes that are consistent with their own personal goals.
As members of the multidisciplinary team that makes up the cancer service line at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center at West Virginia University Hospital (WVUH), the goal of the surgeons within the division of surgical oncology is to provide the highest level of surgical care possible to patients with a cancer diagnosis. Our team of surgical oncologists have interest and expertise in helping to diagnose and treat a variety of cancers including: Breast cancer, Pancreatic cancer, Colorectal and GI cancers. Esophageal cancer, Liver cancer and Melanoma.
