Family Medicine

The Department of Family Medicine is a part of the Health Sciences Center of West Virginia University, Charleston Campus. One of six clinical departments of the WVU Charleston Health Sciences Center, the main hub of departmental and administration operations is housed at the CAMC Family Medicine Center at the Academic Teaching Center 3200 MacCorkle Ave. 5th Floor.

Family medicine provides continuous and comprehensive health care to family members of all ages, from birth throughout life in our NCQA Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) recognized clinic. It provides total family medical care including gynecology, pediatrics and geriatrics, wellness care, and minor surgical procedures. The department manages general health care maintenance, follow-up care for chronic conditions, and acute outpatient issues.

Family Medicine students will actively participate in "hands-on" care for patients from infancy through geriatrics. In addition to the rural health component, the campus-based training provides both inpatient and outpatient management. The ambulatory medicine experience places the student in a wide range of care settings, including our dermatology clinic, outpatient lab, procedures clinic, nursing home and home visit rounds, as well as providing the range of wellness, health maintenance, acute and chronic illness management offered in a comprehensive setting of a busy outpatient clinic. Students are challenged to apply evidence-based principles of disease management in a compassionate, holistic manner, as well as experience the reward of providing continuity care to a variety of patients and their families.
