APPs featured in WVU Medicine APPLAUSE OAPP Newsletter

Holly Weghorst, PA-C; Mary Mitchell, APRN; Renee Schwertfeger, FNP; and Melissa Phillips, FNP, were all recognized for their work in the Department in WVU Medicine’s inaugural issue of their APPLAUSE OAPP Newsletter.

Weghorst has been a practicing PA for 12 years, 11 of those have been with WVU Medicine in Rheumatology. Chief APP - Outpatient since 2017, Weghorst is passionate about learning from her patients and having the chance to teach them.

Mitchell, within the Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, has developed a Multidisciplinary Liver Program for patients with liver cirrhosis that offers patients to be seen by GI and Palliative Care on the same day. Overall patient care has been improved through better symptom control and a decrease in hospitalizations.

Schwertfeger from the Section of Endocrinology has successfully started virtual group visits for endocrine disorders which we featured in last quarter’s newsletter.

Phillips, within the Section of Endocrinology, works as an inpatient provider who plans to improve glycemic control during hospital stays as well as begin a diabetic discharge follow-up service for transitional care.
