Bone Health Optimization Program Reaches Major Milestone

Bone Health Optimization Program Reaches Major Milestone

Great work is happening across our organization – and one standout example is the early success of the Bone Health Optimization Program, launched in January 2024. Designed to enhance preoperative care and long-term outcomes for our orthopaedic patients, this initiative is already making a measurable impact on quality and patient outcomes.

Spearheaded by Drs. Colleen Watkins and Jami Pincavitch and further championed by Dr. John Guido, the program focuses on identifying and treating low bone mass prior to surgery – ultimately reducing fracture risk and improving recovery.

Just this past week, the 1,000th DEXA scan was ordered as part of the program, marking a significant milestone in a short period of time.

Program Performance Highlights:

  • 1,000 DEXA scans ordered on preoperative patients
  • 911 scans completed (103 no-shows)
  • 808 patients with finalized results
  • Over 60% of patients screened were diagnosed with osteopenia
  • 23% (187 patients) have been started on medical treatment for low bone mass

These results highlight the high prevalence of undiagnosed bone health issues in our surgical population – and the critical role this program plays in addressing them. By identifying patients at risk and initiating treatment early, we’re not only improving surgical outcomes, but also helping prevent future complications.

This initiative aligns seamlessly with our broader institutional goals around quality, safety, and value-based care. It’s a powerful example of how targeted, data-driven programs can enhance care and deliver meaningful results for our patients.

Additionally, in recognition of Osteoporosis Awareness Month, Dr. Watkins recently joined the Live Healthy podcast to discuss osteoporosis and proactive bone health strategies. You can listen to the episode “Osteoporosis: Bone Up on Bone Health" here.

Congratulations to all involved in this important work!
