New trainees start next phase of their careers at the WVU School of Medicine
The West Virginia University School of Medicine welcomed the newest class of 266 resident and fellow physicians, dentists, clinical psychologists and researchers to the Graduate Medical Education programs at the Morgantown, Parkersburg and Harpers Ferry campuses during a welcome orientation that took place June 23 and 24.
The cohort includes trainees from 30 states and 28 countries in 96 different specialties, including the inaugural class in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation’s newly established residency program. The WVU School of Medicine offers the most and most-varied training programs in the state.
“We’re excited to welcome these talented learners to campus and see them get acquainted with us and their peers as they embark on their personal journeys to improving the health and wellbeing of their patients,” said Sarah Sofka, M.D., associate dean and designated institutional official for graduate medical education. “Whether they’re here to learn in a rural, primary or specialty care position, we’re confident that patients in West Virginia and beyond will come to know them as compassionate and highly skilled healers.”
Dr. Sofka added that the WVU School of Medicine is the largest and oldest institution in the state that offers specialized graduate medical training, with 75% of those programs being the only ones of their kind offered in West Virginia.
Internal medicine has the largest amount of entering trainees, with 39 total entering across the hospitals in Morgantown, Parkersburg and Martinsburg.
Eighty-six of the trainees have West Virginia ties, including 62 residents and fellows who are WVU graduates and 13 who are Marshall graduates.
Currently, there are more than 648 residents and fellows training within the WVU School of Medicine Department of Graduate Medical Education.
