Physical Therapy program receives orthopedic residency accreditation

The School of Medicine’s Physical Therapy program has been granted accreditation for its orthopedic residency by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education for five years.

Residencies prepare participants to become board certified licensed clinical specialists in their respective practice area. This is the first full-time, in-state orthopedic physical therapy residency in the state of West Virginia, according to Renee McGinnis, PT, DPT, OCS.

Physical therapists who are certified in this specialty area contribute to education and research, in addition to providing clinical care. Completion of a post-professional residency provides advanced clinical training in specific areas of physical therapy practice.

“We are excited to offer post-professional residency opportunities within the state of West Virginia” McGinnis said. “Achievement of an accredited physical therapy residency has been a long-standing goal of the Division of Physical Therapy and demonstrates our commitment to excellence in patient care for the people of our state.”
