WVU Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism develops state's first diabetes fellowship
The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism within the West Virginia University Department of Medicine has developed a new one-year clinical diabetes fellowship and is currently seeking applicants for this admission cycle. This is the first comprehensive diabetes fellowship offered within the WVU School of Medicine.
This innovative program is also the first diabetes fellowship in West Virginia and seventh in the country. This training opportunity is offered to physicians who have successfully completed their training in internal medicine, family medicine or internal medicine/pediatrics.
“West Virginia is one of the states in the ‘diabetes belt.’ More than 1 in 10 adults in West Virginia have diabetes mellitus, ranking West Virginia as the second highest state affected by this disease," said Jennifer Giordano, M.D., the Diabetes Fellowship program director. "It takes a comprehensive team and a lot of education to care for our patients. By producing more physicians who excel in recognizing and treating diabetes, we can really make a difference in the care of our patients, not only here in our home of West Virginia, but also nationally.”
This fellowship includes training in all types of diabetes, nutrition and obesity medicine, diabetic foot and wound care, cardiometabolic disease, insulin pump and continuous glucose monitors, managing group visits and inpatient diabetes management.
