Social Work Internship

The Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry offers Masters' students with a strong interest in clinical social work an opportunity to enhance their understanding of human behavior, psychopathology, and the development of clinical assessment and treatment skills. The Social Work Faculty Section is comprised of six full-time faculty members all of whom are independently licensed in clinical social work practice in West Virginia. Internships are for advanced standing MSW students and second year master level counseling students. There are limited opportunities for MSW generalist placements.

The Department primarily provides treatment to individuals with mental health and substance use disorders to various populations such as: children and adolescents, adults, families, geriatrics, individuals with memory disorders, and individuals with thought disorders. We have a full continuum of care including inpatient hospitalization, Day Hospital, ACT and outpatient treatment services. Trainees will develop diagnostic skills and have the opportunity to develop individual, family and group psychotherapy skills working with diverse clinical populations.

In addition to the Department's clinical experience, there are several ongoing clinical education and training programs in which social work/counseling interns may participate. These include, for example, weekly grand rounds, bi-weekly substance use disorder seminar and the bi-weekly Social Work/Counseling Student Lecture series. Interested students are urged to contact the specific faculty member for individual interviews for placement in their area of interest.
