Outreach

Below you will find a list of past and upcoming community outreach activities for Culinary and Lifestyle Medicine Track students.

  • Charles Town Farmers Market Cooking Demonstrations, Jefferson County, WV
    • Students have periodically attended farmers markets where they have prepared samples of healthy dips and dressings to hand out to patrons and encourage them to add more fruits and vegetables into their diet.
    • Recipes and other taste-testing samples have also been handed out to market patrons by students.

  • Development of a Meal Plan for southern-West Virginians
    • Several students have been involved in many non-traditional projects that they may not usually have the opportunity to participate in otherwise.
      • One student on a rural rotation spent time writing up several recipes for local healthy dishes.
      • One student obtained an INTRO research grant after her first year, where she worked specifically with an at-risk population with type 2 diabetes and peripheral vascular disease. For this project, she developed healthy menus for them, aided in grocery shopping and assisted a vascular surgeon in brainstorming ideas to make a difference in this specialized population.

  • Early Head Start Healthy Habits Curriculum, Jefferson County, WV
    • One culinary student worked with a local pediatrician to remove unhealthy food offerings at the Salvation Army food pantry and replace it with a menu of healthy, kid-friendly recipes.

  • Good Samaritan Free Clinic Cooking Demonstration, Berkeley County, WV 
    • Students and faculty attended fresh produce demonstrations at the Free Clinic using local produce and focusing on healthy fats.

  • Hunger Summit Lecture and Cooking Demonstration, Flatwoods, WV 
    • CLMT faculty, with student representation, have given healthy food talks and food creation demonstrations at the Mountaineer Food Bank Annual Meeting, a several-day retreat for members and workers of all the local food banks in West Virginia.

  • Jefferson County Community Ministries Cooking Classes and Community Meals, Jefferson County, WV 
    • Monthly cooking classes with hands-on class participation were held regularly for several years to show the food pantry clientele how to create healthy and tasty dishes from the common food pantry offerings.

  • Pantry Plus Food Pantry Cooking Demonstrations in Morgantown, WV
    • Students and faculty attended fresh produce demonstrations at the Pantry Plus location in Morgantown using local produce and focusing on identifying healthy fats.
       
  • Ranson Community Gardens Cooking Demonstrations, Jefferson County, WV 
    • Students and faculty attended fresh produce demonstrations at the Ranson Community Gardens using local produce and focusing on identifying healthy fats.

  • Salvation Army Food Pantry Mobile Kitchen, Berkeley County, WV 
    • Students and faculty attended fresh produce demonstrations at the Salvation Army using local produce and focusing on identifying healthy fats.

  • T.A. Lowry Elementary School Cooking Demonstration, Jefferson County, WV 
    • Students hosted hands-on food demonstrations with 5th graders at local elementary schools where they prepared healthy snacks.
