Message from the Program Director
Welcome to the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship Program at West Virginia University!
At West Virginia University, we provide a university-based academic environment for training in gastroenterology and hepatology. We are fully accredited by the
Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) with training leading to eligibility for American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certification.
Our robust clinical training program is three years in duration with a core curriculum that matches national standards. This curriculum provides prolific clinical and technical skills in gastroenterology and hepatology and, with regular trainee assessment and milestone evaluation, shapes excellent gastroenterologists. We have an extensive patient population with vast and varying pathology that provides each fellow with abundant opportunities to learn and understand different fields of gastroenterology and endoscopy.
We pride ourselves on our exceptional ABIM board pass rate, active conference schedule, and attentive and collegial faculty and staff. In addition to core didactic sessions, our fellows experience multidisciplinary sessions in cancer/tumor management, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), pancreaticobiliary disorders, advanced endoscopy, bariatric endoscopy, motility, hepatology and more. Fellows are exposed to pediatric gastroenterology, radiology, pathology, obesity management, motility, surgical management of cancer and IBD in clinical rotations.
In addition to the clinical and endoscopic strengths of WVU, we have placed significant emphasis on research and quality improvement within the section and institution. Scholarly activity is not only required but encouraged and supported. Our faculty mentor fellows on a personal level providing clinical and scientific foundation that helps them excel during training and after, whether they choose to pursue academic or non-academic careers. Our goal is to train excellent and compassionate physicians who improve and promote patient health and care.
WVU, the department of Medicine, the division of GI and Hepatology and I are committed to creating an environment of diversity and inclusion. Our program is proud to provide a supportive space for training and to provide compassionate care to patients of all walks of life.
We hope that you will visit our beautiful and modern campus and consider us for your training. Please reach out with any questions about the program or institution.
Thank you,
