WVU School of Medicine offers new rheumatology fellowship

The West Virginia University School of Medicine announced recently that accreditation was granted for a new fellowship program in rheumatology. The fellowship is the only one in the state, and recruitment for the position starts in fall 2018 with an official start day on July 1, 2019.

This fellowship is a two-year program that accepts one fellow per year. Fellows get the opportunity to rotate with other specialties over the course of their fellowship period including orthopedics, metabolic bone, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, dermatology, ophthalmology, and radiology. They also participate in research projects.

The fellowship program offers training opportunities in the full range of rheumatologic disorders including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia, gout and many other autoimmune diseases of the connective tissues. The program will help train more rheumatologists to serve the needs of the people in West Virginia. Currently, there is a shortage of rheumatologists in the state with many patients travelling long distances to be seen at WVU.

The fellowship program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), a private, non-profit organization that evaluates and accredits graduate medical education (GME) programs.
