Message from the Interim Chair
Welcome to the Department of Radiology at West Virginia University.
As the Interim Chair of the Department of Radiology, I am proud to welcome you to our digital home. At WVU, our mission is built upon a foundation of core values that guide everything we do: clinical endeavors, scholarly pursuits and service to the school, university, state, nation and the world. Whether you are a prospective faculty, resident or fellow, medical student, research collaborator, or a patient seeking world-class imaging services, our department is dedicated to delivering excellence in clinical care, groundbreaking research, and comprehensive medical education.
Our department covers a wide array of specialized clinical services and advanced imaging modalities with fellowship-trained faculty spanning across imaging subspecialties such as abdominopelvic, breast, cardiothoracic, emergency, interventional, musculoskeletal, nuclear medicine/PET, and pediatrics. Powered by state-of-the-art imaging equipment and clinical database systems, our expert faculty and specialized technologists ensure that every scan, intervention, and diagnostic report meets the highest standards of safety, precision, and accuracy.
Education is a centerpiece of our mission. Our highly regarded residency program has recently grown to a permanent complement of 32 residents—alongside our specialized fellowships and radiologic technologist, diagnostic sonographer, and MRI technologist training programs, offers a close-knit and supportive training environment. Trainees learn directly from recognized experts, gaining hands-on clinical experience and robust research opportunities that prepare them to become leaders in the rapidly changing field of diagnostic and interventional radiology.
The Department now comprises 52 physicians, and 6 advanced practice professionals in addition to the residents, fellows, and technologists. We provide coverage to WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, WVU Medicine Galisano Children’s Hospital, and Fairmont Medical Center in north central West Virginia; while also interpreting advanced subspecialty studies from hospitals throughout West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital is a thriving academic medical center. This has been stimulated by growth that has included expansion from 350 beds to 850 beds over the past 12-14 years. During this period of growth, WVU Medicine has invested in new facilities for Neurology/Neurosurgery, and Neuroscience, Cardiology/Cardiac Surgery, and West Virginia’s only dedicated pediatric hospital. Current ongoing projects include a state-of-the-art Ophthalmology Center with future plans for a 10-floor Cancer Center expected by 2030.
At the heart of the Appalachian region, yet close to several metropolitan areas, we are committed to improving the health and well-being of the communities we serve. Thank you for exploring the WVU Department of Radiology, and we invite you to learn more about our ongoing educational, research, and clinical endeavors.
Sincerely,
Brian Markovich, MD
