VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Second Look Weekend: The admissions office is in the process of planning the annual "Second Look Weekend" for those accepted into the Class of 2023. We are looking for students to attend a dinner/social event on Friday, April 26th from 6-9pm at Evansdale Crossing. This event is particularly important, as it lets our incoming students feel connected with current students. Please email Aly Carpenter if you would like to come to the dinner! 

Student Advocates Impacting Decisions on Healthcare (SAID-OH) is hosting a lunch lecture on Thursday, March 28th at 12:00PM in 1905. Nicole Werwie, M4 Class of 2019, will be leading an interactive session on the role of health professionals and meeting med student education needs. Free lunch is provided for students who register for the session. What’s Happening – Morgantown

MEDICINE GRAND ROUNDS Dr. Adam Cohen an esteemed pediatrician and epidemiologist will be giving the Medicine Grand Rounds lecture in Fukushima on Friday March 29th 8-9am. He has worked in over 40 countries and currently lives is Geneva, Switzerland where he works at the World Health Organization coordinating global surveillance for vaccine preventable diseases. All students are encouraged to attend his lecture. 

WELLNESS CLASSES. Yoga for the Professional Student. Classes offered at 3pm in Room G278. Register online. 

BWELL APPOINTMENTS OFFERED for Medical students. Confidential, private appointments for initial assessments, triage and brief interventions for students experiencing life stress, mental illness or problems with alcohol or substance use. CULINARY TRACK There is one opening in the Culinary track for a current first year students

If you are interested, the application is online  and make sure you mark that you are a current first year student. Please email Michelle Alder to let her know you have filled out an application. Email Dr. Lorenzetti with questions regarding the track. There is a paid summer externship for 3 weeks with housing provided in the Eastern Division area ( Harpers Ferry) from June 11 to June 28.

“Narcan Talk” – Mon., Apr. 22nd, 5:30-6:30pm, in Eastern HSC Auditorium.  Community educational discussion presented by Dr. John Aldis to provide information regarding rules, procedures, and use of naloxone (Narcan).

April Grand Rounds – Mon., Apr. 15th, 12-1pm, in BMC 8th Floor Classroom.  Topic: “Cancer-Cardiovascular Interactions: An Introduction to Onco-Cardiology” presented by Dr. Christopher Bianco – WVU Heart & Vascular Institute.

Health & Resiliency Program Yoga (formerly Karma Yoga) – Wednesdays, Jan. 9th through May 1st, 5:30-6:30pm, in Eastern HSC Mountaineer Room.  Free sessions for employees and medical students to promote wellness.  Supplies are limited; if you have yoga equipment, you are encouraged to bring it to the classes.

Research Symposium/Faculty Development – Fri., Mar. 29th, 5:30-7:30pm: Poster presentations/judging and social time.  Sat., Mar. 30th, 8:00am-2:30pm: Various sessions geared toward faculty education, breakfast and lunch included.  2:30-2:45pm: 3-minute presentations from top three poster symposium finalists, and announcement of winners.

Medical M&M – Fri., May 3rd, 12-1pm, in BMC 8th Floor Classroom.  Topic: “Sports Physical in Patients with Eating Disorders: Reaching the Goal or Missing the Mark?” presented by Dr. Jean Someshwar – WVU Medicine Pediatrics.

Volunteer/Community Service Opportunities

Student Volunteers needed Sun., Apr. 14th, 9am, at the Clarion Hotel in Shepherdstown to assist with tear-down after the Children’s Gala.  If interested in helping for community service hours, please contact Dr. Nikki Arvon: alarvon@wvumedicine.org.

Relay for Life Volunteers Needed – Berkeley County: June 1st, 12pm-6am, at Martinsburg High School; Jefferson County: June 22nd, 6pm-6am, at Jefferson High School.  Assistance needed in a variety of areas, including setup/tear-down, registration, accounting, silent auction, and luminarias.  To volunteer or for additional information, contact Dana DeJarnett: dana.dejarnett@wvumedicine.org. 

Sports Physicals – June 4th, 5th, and 6th, 5:30-8:30pm, location TBA.  Medical students needed to assist Dr. Cathy Funk and other physicians with providing sports physicals to high school athletes.  This is a great service to the community and has helped to bring health issues to light.

Stepping Stones/Good Samaritan Free Clinic – Volunteers needed every Wednesday at 5pm and first Tuesday of each month at 5pm.  New location: 601 S. Raleigh Street, Martinsburg.  To volunteer or for additional information: Ayita Verna (agverna@mix.wvu.edu). 

Fun Volunteer Opportunity – Jefferson County Community Ministries Food Pantry, 238 W. Washington Street, Charles Town.  3rd Saturday of each month, beginning at 10am.  Volunteers will work with Dr. Maddie Humerick, Chef Scott, and others to assist the food pantry patrons to improve their nutrition status with monthly cooking demonstrations. Volunteers Needed – Chronic illness group and their support system is looking for speakers to give 45-minute presentations on the first and third Tuesday of each month.  Meetings held 9-10:30am in the Dorothy McCormack Center, 2nd floor conference room.  Topics can be health-related, inspirational, supportive, educational about coping mechanisms, sharing a story/experience, or a fun activity.  Contact Debbie Maiorano at 540-535-5145 or deborahmm@aol.com if interested in volunteering.

Graduation Deadlines

May 1st – All graduation requirements must be met.  Includes passing scores on Step 2 CS, CK, CPX, 100 hours of community service, and satisfactory evaluations in all 4th year clerkships.
