Thuro named residency program director for Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences

Bradley Thuro, M.D., has been named the new residency program director for the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.

Dr. Thuro joined WVU as an assistant professor in 2016, where he has also served as the associate residency program director since 2018. Thuro is the graduate of two fellowship programs, including the Orbital Oncology and Oculoplastic Surgery Fellowship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2016 and the Ophthalmic Pathology Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin in 2014. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Arkansas in 2013, where he was awarded the Resident Teacher of the Year Award in his final year.

Thuro is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and a member of several national and international ophthalmology organizations including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association of University Professors in Ophthalmology and the International Thyroid Eye Disease Society.

Thuro will be taking over the residency program director role from Geoff Bradford M.D., who has served as program director since 2007. Dr. Bradford will continue to serve the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences in his roles as a professor and the vice-chair of education.

“As I assume the role of program director, it is with much honor that I simply have to hold the reigns handed to me from our previous leader and continue to guide forward what has already become an excellent program over many years,” Thuro said. “Nonetheless, with new leadership comes new ideas, new challenges and a new energy. We’ll use this energy and established momentum to continue to rise to the occasion and provide top-tier training for physicians.”
