Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship
Our Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology (ACTA) Fellowship was approved by the ACGME in April 2020, and our first two fellows began training in July 2020. Our one-year fellowship accepts physicians who have completed an accredited anesthesiology residency program.
WVU Ruby Memorial Hospital serves as a tertiary referral center for patients throughout West Virginia and the surrounding region, including Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Our Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anesthesiology is housed within the world-renowned WVU Heart and Vascular Institute, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary. We work alongside an experienced, nationally and internationally recognized team of surgeons performing off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting, complex valve surgery, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, ventricular assist device placement, and heart transplantation. We also perform fast-paced, minimally invasive robotic cardiac surgery, including mitral valve repair, aortic valve replacement – including the world’s first robotic aortic valve replacement (RAVR) in 2020 – and minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass grafting.
Our equally busy cardiology service offers a broad range of advanced procedures, including electrophysiology, transcatheter aortic and mitral valve replacement, transcatheter mitral and tricuspid valve repair, and left atrial appendage closure. Our team frequently provides advanced structural heart imaging for these procedures using transesophageal echocardiography (TEE).
We are committed to developing proficient, thoughtful cardiac anesthesiologists who are confident in both the anesthetic management of critically ill adult cardiothoracic patients and advanced perioperative TEE. Graduates are well prepared for the for adult cardiac anesthesia practice, high-acuity generalist practice, the Advanced PTEeXAM, and the ABA Adult Cardiac Anesthesiology examination.
Our faculty have trained at respected institutions throughout the country, including Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, Cornell University, Mount Sinai Hospital, Allegheny General Hospital, Wake Forest University, Johns Hopkins Hospital, the University of Kentucky, and West Virginia University. Each faculty member brings a unique perspective to cardiac anesthesia and perioperative TEE, creating an ideal environment for fellows to develop a practice style that reflects their individual strengths and career goals.
Just as important as the clinical experience is the culture of our program. We are a close-knit group of anesthesiologists, residents, nurse anesthetists, and anesthesia technicians who work together in a collegial, family-like atmosphere. Beyond the hospital, West Virginia offers an exceptional quality of life and countless opportunities to experience our “Wild and Wonderful” outdoors. We hope you will leave fellowship not only as an exceptional cardiac anesthesiologist, but also with an appreciation for the people, places, and experiences that make West Virginia special – and perhaps why Country Roads always seem to lead home.
