Department of Biochemistry Supplemental Funding Support
The Biochemistry Department Supplemental Funding program provides resources to enable completion of specific research projects/task that need targeted investment to submit/re-submit grants, publish peer-reviewed manuscripts/books or support personnel critical to outlined above tasks.
Purpose
This Funding mechanism is intended to support the research projects/tasks/personnel for which no other funding resources are immediately available and that are critical for submission/re-submission/revision of a current grant application or manuscript.
This Funding Support is not intended to replace Bridge Funding from Office of Grad. Education and Research and is not renewable.
This Funding Support is not intended to provide “seed” funding for developing new applications.
Eligibility
All Biochemistry Faculty are eligible to apply.
The applying PI must have critique for the grant or manuscript with specific recommendations available to be eligible for this funding mechanism.

Scope of Award / Use of Funds
Requests should be limited to the minimum funding necessary to complete a defined project/task over 9 months or less.
The amount of funding provided depends on the specific research need, the applicant’s past record of sponsored funding and the prospects for securing new sponsored funding (based on %, impact score from peer review).
The specific amount requested has to be justified by the need and budget.
This funding is not renewable, and unspent funds will be returned to the department.
Budget
An itemized budget is required for this funding mechanism.
The following will be considered for funding support:
- Up to 5K for minimal essential lab supplies, work order/service to complete requested task.
- The essential salary/stipend for tech/or postdoc/or student as justified per grant/ manuscript needs.
- Up to 1K/per services:
- Grant Writers & Paper Consultants
- Graphic Artists
- Biostatisticians
The following are not eligible for funding support:
- Travel, seminar, or conference registration fees (there is different funding line for this need)
- Faculty salaries
- Administrative costs
- Equipment
- Compensation for past deficit spending
Application Elements

- A budget justification that fully explains the relationship of costs to the proposed activity and the basis for cost estimates.
Review
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and will be completed within 1 week of submitted request.
The leadership team, department chair and other colleagues may be consulted in evaluating supplement-funding applications.
Applications with pre-authorized matching funds secured by the PI from other sources, including other department, school/college and research center/institute (if applicable) will be prioritized.
Reporting Requirements
All recipients are required to submit a progress report 9-12 months after receipt of funds. This report should be a summary of one page or less indicating the following:
- Funding received/submitted since the receipt of supplemental funding
- Manuscripts published or submitted since the receipt of supplemental funding
- Any other measures of research success or productivity that are connected to the supplemental funding.
