Pearls Conference 2026 is an accredited CME event hosted by the WVU Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the WVU Eye Institute in Morgantown, West Virginia, on Saturday, April 25, from 7:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

This conference is intended for attending physicians, fellows and residents who practice ophthalmology. Speakers from WVU Medicine and other leading medical institutions across the country will give presentations on topics such as retinal detachment management, uveitis treatment, and the importance of global ophthalmology initiatives.

  • Lectures: 8 - 12:15 p.m. (including breaks)
  • Lunch: 12:15 - 1:30 p.m.

Conference Objectives

Following this conference, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the advantages and disadvantages of air vs SF6 and C3F8 gas tamponades
  • Describe the ocular side effects of several classes of immunotherapies or targeted cancer agents 
  • Identify neuro-ophthalmic disorders and red flags that may be presented to the cataract surgeon
  • Explain the mechanism by which goniotomy and GATT reduce intraocular pressure in uveitis and steroid response glaucoma 
  • Determine which patients with uveitis are better candidates for valved versus non-valved glaucoma tube implants
  • List five sight-threatening complications of retinal detachment surgery
  • Recognize how to identify and treat increased intracranial pressure (IIH)
  • Describe a stepwise treatment approach to the management of ocular inflammation
  • Identify the largest contributors to medical waste in a retina clinic and how to reduce landfill
  • Describe the non-surgical management of complex basal cell carcinoma
  • Explain the advantages of capsule autograft versus cadaveric tissue
  • Discuss the needs of global ophthalmology and how to plan a surgical mission trip

The West Virginia University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The WVU Office of CME designates this live activity for a maximum of 5.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
