Clinical Care

Medical Weight Management (MWM) is part of the WVU Medicine Medical and Surgical Weight Loss Center. This medical and surgical collaboration is recognized through an obesity medicine accreditation from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Association Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP).

The fellow’s clinical home is in the multidisciplinary Medical Weight Management clinic where they will obtain the skills to practice high-quality obesity medicine. The volume of patients served and the number of clinical staff is continuing to increase due to high demand. Group visits (“Eat well”) are being offered virtually to increase patient engagement and access to care. Meal replacement options are available to interested patients.

The clinical Center is unique in the breadth of services offered that encompass all obesity treatment options. In addition to medical and surgical obesity treatments, bariatric endoscopy services are led by Dr. Shailendra Singh. Pediatric services have been added under the leadership of Dr. Treah Haggerty and the pediatric program is expanding to meet the growing demand. This multidisciplinary clinic addresses obesity from a family approach and is conducted jointly with pediatric psychologist Dr. Jennifer Ludrosky.

We are proud to report an overall one-year average weight loss from July 2022-June 2023 of 13.2% and a reduction in average BMI from 42.8 to 36.8. This is a 14% decrease in BMI and a reduction from an average Class 3 to Class 2 obesity.

Interested fellows can be involved in education as Medical Weight Management serves as a clinical training site for approximately 100 learners annually from the WVU Health Sciences Center, including medical students, residents, and fellows.

Educational opportunities will be increasing as the internal medicine residency program has added an obesity medicine track. It has sparked a lot of interest and our first cohort will welcome five residents to this track. They will be spending additional time in our clinic and getting involved in our projects.
