Curriculum

WVU’s Residency Program offers electives in all sub-specialties throughout the School of Medicine, as well as tailored tracks of study within the internal medicine program. Whether you decide to go into private practice, pursue a career in academic medicine or continue your education with sub-specialty training as a fellow, the curriculum is designed to provide residents with all of the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to be a successful physician.

WVU STEPS: The David and Jo Ann Shaw Center for Simulation Training and Education for Patient Safety is a state-of-the-art simulation center.

At this facility residents can learn and practice:

  • Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) curriculum (electives available during the PGY3 year)
  • Code and rapid and response scenarios
  • Telemedicine
  • Handoffs
  • Discharge

Residents as Teachers: Retreat during the PGY-2 year where residents learn:

  • Feedback and evaluation
  • Precepting on the fly
  • Team leadership and professional role-modeling
  • Note writing and teaching procedures

In-House Board Review: Offered in early June, PGY-3 residents getting ready to take the ABIM can complete a 3-day high yield board review course.

Commercial Board Review Courses: All graduating residents are eligible for a program funded board review course either on-line or in person.

National Meetings and Conferences: If a resident has an abstract or presentation accepted to a national meeting, the program will cover the cost of travel and the conference up to two times during residency.
