Residency Application Criteria and Information

Please review the following information before applying for WVU's Internal Medicine Residency Program: 

  • The highest priority is given to graduates of LCME-accredited medical schools.
  • To be eligible for selection, applicants must apply via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) by December 1st and must enroll in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). No applications are accepted or reviewed outside of these sites.
    • For the 2024 ERAS® cycle, our program will utilize a supplemental ERAS application, offered through the AAMC’s ERAS program. This supplemental application is optional. The additional information is an opportunity for our program staff to learn more about applicants’ medical education journey, including more meaningful information about work, volunteer, and research experiences, and help us better identify applicants who fit our program environment and mission. This supplemental ERAS application will be delivered on a survey platform outside the MyERAS between September 1 and September 30. Click here for more information.
  • Our institution only sponsors J-1 visas. We do not sponsor H-1b visas.
  • All applicants must have three letters of recommendation.
  • All applicants should be within four years of graduation from medical school at the time of Match.
  • All applicants must have proof of passing scores on USMLE Step 1/COMLEX Level 1 and Step 2CK/COMLEX Level 2. We do not have a minimum passing score requirement for the USMLE and COMLEX exams.
  • International Medical Graduates must provide proof of ECFMG eligibility for a J-1 visa by the time of ranking in the NRMP.
  • All applicants are encouraged to have a minimum of three months of US Clinical experience. This is NOT a requirement but is highly recommended. 
  • Selection for interview is based on all of the following: performance on USMLE/COMLEX, grades in preclinical or clinical courses, letters of recommendation, communication skills, and personal qualities.
  • The Department does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, or veteran status.
  • Interviews are conducted from mid-October through January.
  • Applications are only accepted through ERAS and review of applications will be conducted September through December 1st.
  • We do not offer prematch, outside matches, or preliminary positions. However, West Virginia University School of Medicine does offer a Transitional Year Program. You may obtain further information on the WVU School of Medicine, Graduate Medical Education webpage.
  • Our program has approximately 27 positions for the intern year.
