Ayodele Adelanwa
“I count myself fortunate to be a product of our program.”
Ayodele Adelanwa, M.D., a Pathology resident at the West Virginia University School of Medicine, speaks on what inspired her to choose WVU and pursue a career in pathology.
A native of Nigeria, Ayodele says she has experienced firsthand the needless casualties from a derelict healthcare system. She mentions that her mother almost succumbed to this exact system - one that needed reform. Ayodele was convinced it was her calling to bring about change. She knew one day she would be able to give back to those who needed it most.
She knew that WVU School of Medicine would give her a great education coupled with training that would equip her to be the best physician she could be.
“My expectations were met and exceeded,” Ayodele said. “The faculty truly cared about me, not only as a budding physician, but as an individual.”
Looking back, she is grateful for the path she took. Although not smooth or easy, her fortitude, resilience, and perseverance led her to one of her most memorable experiences: her medical school graduation day. Adelanwa credits her success to the support she received – From God, her family, and from the faculty members she considers to be family because of their dedication to her journey from the very beginning.
Ayodele earned her M.D. degree at West Virginia University. After residency training to become a board certified AP/CP Pathologist, she will continue with fellowship training, with the goal of working in a setting that allows her to be involved in her local community.

Pathology is the medical specialty responsible for the rendering of definitive diagnoses in order for a treatment plan to be developed for the management of a patient. Pathology permits the examination of every patient’s disease at a cellular level so that an accurate diagnosis can be determined.
The significance of pathologists in West Virginia is that with accurate diagnosis, better care can be provided for those who need it and help improve the health of the people of our state and create an opportunity for a brighter future for our state.
