OBJECTIVES:

The 2 week rotation will provide the student opportunity to gain work experience in a level III NICU. During each rotation, there should be only one learner per preceptor. The student will have opportunity to: be part of the team taking care of high-risk newborn patients, ranging from critical newborn infants to those who need only support care during transition from in utero to extra uterine life; become familiar with the Newborn Resuscitation Program, by attending and participating in resuscitation of the high-risk newborn; provide newborn respiratory care, with a focus on non-invasive respiratory support (oxygen supplements, nasal cannula, high flow nasal cannula, and CPAP) ; and learn about nutritional supports, fluid management, and specific organ/system disease/conditions in the high-risk neonate. The rotation will also provide the student an opportunity to focus on common community issues leading to disease/conditions in the neonate, such as intrauterine drug exposure, maternal alcohol use and smoking during pregnancy and poor social situation. The student will also gain experience in interacting professionally as part of the team. The opportunity to attend and perform neonatal procedure will based on the clinical indication of patients in the NICU during the rotation. Procedures using simulation models will be provided based on availability of the preceptor.  

Patient Care:

  • Participate in daily rounding of assigned patients at the BMC NICU under close supervision by preceptor.
  • Gather daily information, perform physical exam and generate plan of care for each patient. 
  • Participate in delivery room consultations/resuscitation.
  • Participate in prenatal consultation.

Medical Knowledge:

  • Complete reading topics specific to neonatal-perinatal medicine

Practice-Based Learning:

  • Able to search each learning topics using study tools and available valid resources and be able to discuss those topics with the preceptor.

Communication Skills:

  • Observe and practice communication with parents, bedside staff and other healthcare personnel in the BMC NICU and with other departments involved in care for the neonate.

Professionalism:

  • Gain experience interacting professionally with parents, NICU staff and other healthcare personnel

Systems-Based Practice: 

  • Use EMR and other systems in order to provided evidence based practice in conjunction with individualized patient care.

METHODS TO ACHIEVE OBJECTIVES:

  • During the rotation, the preceptor will assign patients to and instruct the student.
  • The preceptor will assign reading topics to the student at the beginning of the rotation.
  • The preceptor will assign additional relevant reading topics, based on the patient’s clinical condition.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURES AND EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Formative Assessment: Direct observation and directed feedback by preceptor.

Summative Assessment: Written clinical performance evaluation and oral presentation evaluation.
