Inpatient Pediatrics

The inpatient pediatric rotation is a block-long experience that takes place at WVU Medicine’s Children Hospital.  It is a state-of-the-art facility for pediatric patients located within Ruby Memorial Hospital. In the near future, the Women’s and Children’s Hospital will move into a brand new featured tower currently under construction.  You will be incorporated into a team consisting of staff physicians, advanced practice professionals, and residents at multiple levels of training in pediatrics and medicine/pediatrics.

You will become proficient in the evaluation and management of common pediatric illnesses in the inpatient setting and during emergency department consultation. The hospital is home to many specialty services, and as a result pediatric patients are transferred from throughout West Virginia and the region. You will work closely with these specialists (gastroenterology, pulmonology, infectious disease, neurology, surgery, cardiology, nephrology, endocrinology, allergy and immunology, genetics) for inpatient management of common illnesses in complex patients, as well as, complications associated with rare and/or complex illness.  Lastly, you will also gain significant experience managing cystic fibrosis patients in collaboration with WVU’s Mountain State Cystic Fibrosis Center, a chartered National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation member.
