What’s Happening – Morgantown

FARMER’S MARKET will be held every Wednesday. This year the market will be moved closer to the HSC North Pylons entrance.

APPOINTMENTS OFFERED for Medical students. Confidential, private appointments for initial assessments, triage and brief interventions for students experiencing life stress, mental illness or problems with alcohol or substance use. If you do not have any hold on your account, you’ll get an email in mid June from the Office of University Registrar regarding your diploma shipment. Diplomas are created and shipped through a third party by the Registrar’s office NOT through Student Services!

PEDS Grand Rounds is broadcast from Morgantown every Wednesday 8-9 am. The first Wednesday is at the board room on the 8th floor of BMC.  Remaining sessions held at the ED conference room in ED of BMC.  If you are on a Pediatrics Week, please plan to attend.

Tumor Board – Thur., June 6th, 12-1pm, in BMC 8th Floor Classroom.  Topic: “Scapula Follicular Lymphoma” presented by Dr. Sam Wanko (Hem/Onc) and Dr. Ryan Livengood (Pathology).

Health & Resiliency Program Yoga (formerly Karma Yoga) – Wednesdays, May 8th-Dec. 18th, 5:00-7:00pm, in Eastern HSC Mountaineer Room.  Free sessions for employees and medical students to promote wellness.  Supplies are limited; if you have yoga equipment, you are encouraged to bring it to the classes.

Medical M & M – Fri., June 7th, 12-1pm, in BMC 8th Floor Classroom.  Topic: “Management of Supratherapeutic INR” presented by Ajay Virmani, MD (Regional Director-WVU Heart and Vascular Institute, East) and Emily Larry, PharmD (PGY1 Pharmacy Resident, WVU Medicine).

Grand Rounds – Mon., June 17th, 12-1pm, in BMC 8th Floor Classroom.  Topic: “Update on Medical Therapy for Diabetes Mellitus” presented by Dr. James Field, Assistant Clinical Professor-University Endocrinology Associates. 

Volunteer/Community Service Opportunities

Relay for Life Volunteers Needed –Jefferson County: June 22nd, 6pm-6am, at Jefferson High School.  Assistance needed in a variety of areas, including setup/tear-down, registration, accounting, silent auction, and luminarias.  To volunteer or for additional information, contact Dana DeJarnett: dana.dejarnett@wvumedicine.org. 

Sports Physicals – June 4th, 5th, and 6th, 5:30-8:30pm, at Dorothy McCormack Center.  Medical students needed to assist Dr. Cathy Funk and other physicians with providing sports physicals to high school athletes.  This is a great service to the community and has helped to bring health issues to light.

Stepping Stones/Good Samaritan Free Clinic – Volunteers needed every Wednesday at 5pm and first Tuesday of each month at 5pm.  New location: 601 S. Raleigh Street, Martinsburg.  To volunteer or for additional information: Ayita Verna (agverna@mix.wvu.edu).

Fun Volunteer Opportunity – Jefferson County Community Ministries Food Pantry, 238 W. Washington Street, Charles Town.  3rd Saturday of each month, beginning at 10am.  Volunteers will work with Dr. Maddie Humerick, Chef Scott, and others to assist the food pantry patrons to improve their nutrition status with monthly cooking demonstrations. Volunteers Needed – Chronic illness group and their support system is looking for speakers to give 45-minute presentations on the first and third Tuesday of each month.  Meetings held 9-10:30am in the Dorothy McCormack Center, 2nd floor conference room.  Topics can be health-related, inspirational, supportive, educational about coping mechanisms, sharing a story/experience, or a fun activity.  Contact Debbie Maiorano at 540-535-5145 or deborahmm@aol.com if interested in volunteering.

VSAS Transcripts – If you need a transcript for VSAS, please contact Eastern Student Services office.

NAU MODULE: Be sure to complete your required IV start on a patient in the hospital under nurse supervision.  Go to either Same-Day Surgery or Emergency Department at BMC to complete this task.

Case Logs – ALL case logs in E-value MUST be completed prior to final exams, so please check your account and make sure you have entered all required procedures for your clerkships.

Computers – Please bring your laptops to Student Services on the afternoon of Friday, June 7th, to allow IT to clear them for secure final exam testing.

Final Exam Schedule

Thur., June 20th, 8:30am-12pm: FM/IM

*Please plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to test time to ensure your computer is set up and working properly.

End-of-Semester Luncheon – Thur., June 20th, in HSC Mountaineer Room immediately after final testing (approx. 12:00pm).  This is a fun, post-exam wind-down with campus Deans and Clerkship Directors, so we hope everyone will attend.  Please RSVP for food count to Michelle Alder: alderm@wvumedicine.org.
