MS3 Class of 2020

2019-2020 TERRY AND FRANCES SEELINGER SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

Applicants must be residents of the state of West Virginia; pursuing a M.D. degree in the School of Medicine; full-time second, third or
fourth year students in good standing; and must not be related to the donors or to any representative of the donors by birth, marriage or
economic dependency. Three $4000 scholarships are awarded each year. Applicants must demonstrate: entrepreneurial instincts and abilities; acceptance of and adherence to work ethic; and strong academic promise through past performance. Recipients must express written
appreciation to the donors and provide a written progress report to the donors prior to scholarship renewal. The deadline for application
is April 15.

GETTING TO RESIDENCY 1.0 will be held Friday, April 26th from 1-3pm in 1901. We will discuss Residency match processes, you’ll get your
GTR Handbook, and we’ll schedule your courses. This is a MANDATORY meeting. More details to come.

CULINARY TRACK There is one opening in the culinary track for a current first year students

If you are interested, the application is online  and make sure you mark that you are a current first year student. Please email Michelle Alder to let her know you have filled out an application. Email Dr. Lorenzetti with questions regarding the track. There is a paid summer externship for 3 weeks with housing provided in the Eastern Division area (Harpers Ferry) from June 11 to June 28.

What’s Happening – Charleston

COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS Medical Students are invited volunteer for the Au-some Family Fun Day at Camp Appalachia on Saturday April 13, 2019.  This event will raise autism awareness and funds to support summer day programs at Camp Appalachia for atypical children and their families.  The day kicks off with a pancake breakfast beginning at 8am. We need volunteers to help with the race, manning stations and helping with any bumps and bruises which may occur. The race begins promptly at 9:00am and we will need you at your station by that time.  The race ends by noon but feel free to hang out and have some fun! Health & Resiliency Program Yoga (formerly Karma Yoga) – Wednesdays, Jan. 9th through May 1st, 5:30-6:30pm, in Eastern HSC Mountaineer Room.  Free sessions for employees and medical students to promote wellness.  Supplies are limited; if you have yoga equipment, you are encouraged to bring it to the classes.

Volunteer/Community Service Opportunities

Relay for Life Volunteers Needed – Berkeley County: June 1st, 12pm-6am, at Martinsburg High School; Jefferson County: June 22nd, 6pm-6am, at Jefferson High School.  Assistance needed in a variety of areas, including setup/tear-down, registration, accounting, silent auction, and luminarias.  To volunteer or for additional information, contact Dana DeJarnett: dana.dejarnett@wvumedicine.org. 

Sports Physicals – June 4th, 5th, and 6th, 5:30-8:30pm, location TBA.  Medical students needed to assist Dr. Cathy Funk and other physicians with providing sports physicals to high school athletes.  This is a great service to the community and has helped to bring health issues to light.

Stepping Stones/Good Samaritan Free Clinic – Volunteers needed every Wednesday at 5pm and first Tuesday of each month at 5pm.  New location: 601 S. Raleigh Street, Martinsburg.  To volunteer or for additional information: Ayita Verna (agverna@mix.wvu.edu). 

Fun Volunteer Opportunity – Jefferson County Community Ministries Food Pantry, 238 W. Washington Street, Charles Town.  3rd Saturday of each month, beginning at 10am.  Volunteers will work with Dr. Maddie Humerick, Chef Scott, and others to assist the food pantry patrons to improve their nutrition status with monthly cooking demonstrations. Volunteers Needed – Chronic illness group and their support system is looking for speakers to give 45-minute presentations on the first and third Tuesday of each month.  Meetings held 9-10:30am in the Dorothy McCormack Center, 2nd floor conference room.  Topics can be health-related, inspirational, supportive, educational about coping mechanisms, sharing a story/experience, or a fun activity.  Contact Debbie Maiorano at 540-535-5145 or deborahmm@aol.com if interested in volunteering.

Graduation Deadlines

May 1st – All graduation requirements must be met.  Includes passing scores on Step 2 CS, CK, CPX, 100 hours of community service, and satisfactory evaluations in all 4th year clerkships.

NAU MODULE: Be sure to complete your required IV start on a patient in the hospital under nurse supervision.  Go to either Same-Day Surgery or Emergency Department at BMC to complete this task.
