What’s Happening – Morgantown

WELLNESS CLASSES. Yoga for the Professional Student. Classes offered at 3pm in Room G278. Register online.

BWELL APPOINTMENTS OFFERED for Medical students. Confidential, private appointments for initial assessments, triage and brief interventions for students experiencing life stress, mental illness or problems with alcohol or substance use. FINANCIAL PLANNING SEMINAR Preparing Financially for Residency will be held March 7 from 8:30-12pm in Erma Byrd 201. RSVP to Amy.  In addition to the seminar, individual financial advisor sessions will be offered on March 7 and 8. You can sign up for a session through SOLE – Financial Management – Sign Up Lists.

MATCH DAY! Morgantown’s Match Day Celebration at Lakeview on Friday, March 15th beginning at 10:30am.  You may bring up to 3 guests and need to RSVP here.

GETTING TO RESIDENCY 1.0 will be held Friday, April 26th from 1-3pm in 1901. We will discuss Residency match processes, you’ll get your GTR Handbook, and we’ll schedule your courses. This is a MANDATORY meeting. More details to come.

GLOBAL HEALTH ROTATION Dr. Cannarella Lorenzetti (from Eastern Campus) on a humanitarian global health trip with the Patch Adams organization. Dr. Lorenzetti is planning now to go to Morocco in last several days March /first week  April 2020 with same organization.

WHITE COAT CEREMONY - Saturday, March 23 @ 2pm at the Morgantown Event Center. Reply to Sheri Frankenberry by February 15 regarding your name and hometown for White Coat Program. White Coat lunch meeting will be held March 18 at 12pm in 1905.  Rehearsal will be on Friday, March 22 @ 2pm.

STEP 1 APPLICATIONS – are due by March 15th to the Student Services Office. Please remember to have your photo printed, name written on back of photo and photo taped to form. Email Amy or Sheri with any questions.

MS1 Class of 2021

ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT SITE on SOLE houses all opportunities that pass through Student Services, including WVU externships. The deadline for the WVU externships is March 15th!  

CULINARY TRACK There is one opening in the Culinary track for a current first year students

If you are interested, the application is online  and make sure you mark that you are a current first year student. Please email Michelle Alder to let her know you have filled out an application. Email Dr. Lorenzetti with questions regarding the track. There is a paid summer externship for 3 weeks with housing provided in the Eastern Division area ( Harpers Ferry) from June 11 to June 28.

PEDS Grand Rounds is broadcast from Morgantown every Wednesday 8-9 am. The first Wednesday is at the board room on the 8th floor of BMC.  Remaining sessions held at the ED conference room in ED of BMC.  If you are on a Pediatrics Week, please plan to attend.

March Grand Rounds – Mon., Mar. 18th, 12-1pm, in BMC 8th Floor Classroom.  Topic: “Active Shooter Preparedness Course” presented by Michael Godwin (Director-BMC Security), Donald Grubb (Director-BMC Safety), and Nathan Harmon (BMC Security Driving/Firearms/Tactics Instructor).

Health & Resiliency Program Yoga (formerly Karma Yoga) – Wednesdays, Jan. 9th through May 1st, 5:30-6:30pm, in Eastern HSC Mountaineer Room.  Free sessions for employees and medical students to promote wellness.  Supplies are limited; if you have yoga equipment, you are encouraged to bring it to the classes.

Volunteer/Community Service Opportunities

Stepping Stones/Good Samaritan Free Clinic – Volunteers needed every Wednesday at 5pm and first Tuesday of each month at 5pm.  New location: 601 S. Raleigh Street, Martinsburg.  To volunteer or for additional information: Ayita Verna (agverna@mix.wvu.edu).

Fun Volunteer Opportunity – Jefferson County Community Ministries Food Pantry, 238 W. Washington Street, Charles Town.  3rd Saturday of each month, beginning at 10am.  Volunteers will work with Dr. Maddie Humerick, Chef Scott, and others to assist the food pantry patrons to improve their nutrition status with monthly cooking demonstrations. Volunteers Needed – Chronic illness group and their support system is looking for speakers to give 45-minute presentations on the first and third Tuesday of each month.  Meetings held 9-10:30am in the Dorothy McCormack Center, 2nd floor conference room.  Topics can be health-related, inspirational, supportive, educational about coping mechanisms, sharing a story/experience, or a fun activity.  Contact Debbie Maiorano at 540-535-5145 or deborahmm@aol.com if interested in volunteering.

MS4 Class of 2019

Graduate Medical Questionnaire – All 4th year medical students are asked to complete regarding your medical student learning experience.  100% participation is encouraged.  Students who complete the survey will be entered into a prize drawing for a Sheetz gift card, to be held on Mar. 1st.  After completion of the survey, be sure to save or print the certificate and email to Jane Horst (horstj@wvumedicine.org) to verify and be eligible for the drawing.

Class of 2019 MATCH Celebration – Fri., Mar. 15th, at Purple Iris in Martinsburg, WV.  Arrival at venue may begin approximately 11:30am, with envelope distribution at 12:01pm and luncheon immediately following.  Please RSVP to Michelle Alder (alderm@wvumedicine.org) with number of guests attending by Mar. 11th.

Class of 2019 Commencement – MD Commencement ceremony scheduled for Fri., May 10, 2019, 7pm, at the Creative Arts Center in Morgantown.  Please direct any questions to Amy Drvar (amy.drvar@hsc.wvu.edu).

Graduation Deadlines

Mar. 1st – Must APPLY for graduation with the University.  Submit via STAR through registrar’s website (https://registrar.wvu.edu/graduation-diploma).

May 1st – All graduation requirements must be met.  Includes passing scores on Step 2 CS, CK, CPX, 100 hours of community service, and satisfactory evaluations in all 4th year clerkships.
