What’s Happening – Morgantown

WELLNESS CLASSES. Yoga for the Professional Student. Classes offered at 3pm in Room G278. Register online.

BWELL APPOINTMENTS OFFERED for Medical students. Confidential, private appointments for initial assessments, triage and brief interventions for students experiencing life stress, mental illness or problems with alcohol or substance use. CULINARY TRACK There is one opening in the culinary track for a current first year students.If you are interested, the application is online and make sure you mark that you are a current first year student. Please email Michelle Alder to let her know you have filled out an application. Email Dr. Lorenzetti with questions regarding the track. There is a paid summer externship for 3 weeks with housing provided in the Eastern Division area (Harpers Ferry) from June 11 to June 28.

IMPORTANT DATES:

PEDS Grand Rounds is broadcast from Morgantown every Wednesday 8-9 am. The first Wednesday is at the board room on the 8th floor of BMC. Remaining sessions held at the ED conference room in ED of BMC. If you are on a Pediatrics Week, please plan to attend.

Tumor Board – Thur., May 9^th, 12-1pm, in BMC 8^th Floor Classroom. Topic: “Lung Cancer” presented by Dr. Sam Wanko (Hem/Onc) and Dr. Ryan Livengood (Pathology).

Health & Resiliency Program Yoga (formerly Karma Yoga) – Wednesdays, May 8^th-Dec. 18^th, 5:00-7:00pm, in Eastern HSC Mountaineer Room. Free sessions for employees and medical students to promote wellness. Supplies are limited; if you have yoga equipment, you are encouraged to bring it to the classes.

Eastern Panhandle Medical Society – Wed., May 8^th, at Purple Iris in Martinsburg. Lecture – 6:00pm; Dinner – 7:00pm. Topic: “Overcoming Access Barriers and Practice Challenges to PCSK9 Inhibitor Implementation for Cholesterol Management” presented by Dr. Michael Miller, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine, Epidemiology, & Public Health – University of MD School of Medicine and Director, Center for Preventive Cardiology – University of MD Medical Center, Baltimore MD.

Help2Quit Program – Thur., May 16^th, 5:30-7:30pm, in Eastern HSC Mountaineer Room. Educational program focused on providing information for healthcare professionals to help pregnant patients with smoking cessation and to discuss in-state resources to reduce smoking during and post-pregnancy. Program will feature a 4-physician panel. Dinner included.

Grand Rounds – Mon., May 20^th, 12:00-1:00pm, in BMC 8^th Floor Classroom. Topic: “A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Critical Communication in the Medical Context” presented by Susan Wieczorek, PhD – Assistant Professor, Communication Department, University of Pittsburgh.

Community Mini-Med School – Tue., May 21^st, 7pm, in Eastern HSC Auditorium. Topic: “Brain Food: Food, Movement, and Brain Health” presented by Dr. Apoorv Prasad, WVU Medicine MedCHEFS and Metabolic Center Faculty. Food demos/tastings offered by medical students.

Evidence Based Medicine Review – Wed., May 22^nd, 12-1pm, in BMC 8^th Floor Classroom. Topic: “Management of Sepsis in Adults” presented by Dr. Matthew Simmons (Infectious Disease) and Kalindi Patel, PharmD.

Volunteer/Community Service Opportunities

Relay for Life Volunteers Needed – Berkeley County: June 1^st, 12pm-6am, at Martinsburg High School; Jefferson County: June 22^nd, 6pm-6am, at Jefferson High School. Assistance needed in a variety of areas, including setup/tear-down, registration, accounting, silent auction, and luminarias. To volunteer or for additional information, contact Dana DeJarnett: dana.dejarnett@wvumedicine.org.

Sports Physicals – June 4^th, 5^th, and 6^th, 5:30-8:30pm, location TBA. Medical students needed to assist Dr. Cathy Funk and other physicians with providing sports physicals to high school athletes. This is a great service to the community and has helped to bring health issues to light.

Volunteers for Running Events – Assistance needed with 2 running events coordinated by Dr. Mark Cucuzzella. Sat., May 11^th: Ranson Mile, on Fairfax Blvd. near JMC. Race begins at 11am,help needed 10:30-11:30am. Fri./Sat., May 17^th & 18^th: 10^th Annual Harpers Ferry Half Marathon. Volunteers needed to help on Friday with course prep from 8amuntil dark, and for race support (including medical) on Saturday, 7am-12pm. Stepping Stones/Good Samaritan Free Clinic – Volunteers needed every Wednesday at 5pm and first Tuesday of each month at 5pm. New location: 601 S. Raleigh Street, Martinsburg. To volunteer or for additional information: Ayita Verna (agverna@mix.wvu.edu).

Fun Volunteer Opportunity – Jefferson County Community Ministries Food Pantry, 238 W. Washington Street, Charles Town. 3^rd Saturday of each month, beginning at 10am. Volunteers will work with Dr. Maddie Humerick, Chef Scott, and others to assist the food pantry patrons to improve their nutrition status with monthly cooking demonstrations. Help needed with setup, tear-down, cooking process, and interacting with patrons. For additional information, contact: Audreanna James, OMS-III (ajames@osteo.wvsom.edu). Volunteers Needed – Chronic illness group and their support system is looking for speakers to give 45-minute presentations on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Meetings held 9-10:30am in the Dorothy McCormack Center, 2^nd floor conference room. Topics can be health-related, inspirational, supportive, educational about coping mechanisms, sharing a story/experience, or a fun activity. NAU MODULE: Be sure to complete your required IV start on a patient in the hospital under nurse supervision. Go to either Same-Day Surgery or Emergency Department at BMC to complete this task.
