Objectives

To introduce the student to the practice of comprehensive physical rehabilitation of the disabled.

Methods to Achieve Objectives

The student will participate in the care of inpatients and outpatients at the Charleston Area Rehabilitation Center, a 40-bed unit located at CAMC General Hospital. The student will perform comprehensive examinations on selected patients, follow their course on the unit and in therapy, and participate in team conferences. A variety of disabilities will be studied including spinal cord injury, stroke, head injury, limb amputation, arthritis, and multiple trauma. The student will be introduced to the disciplines of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, and rehabilitation nursing and learn appropriate methods of utilizing these services for his or her patients. This elective should be of special interest to students planning residencies in Family Practice, Neurology, Neurological Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
