Clinical Anesthesiology
LOCATION: Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, West Virginia
PRECEPTOR: Justin Christensen, DO
DURATION: 2 weeks
OFFERED: Continuously (Unavailable Block 2)
MAXIMUM ENROLLMENT: 5 students
STATUS: This rotation fulfills the senior year requirement for Anesthesiology
Objectives
Our goal is to assist senior medical students to develop basic acute care medical skills which are useful in any medical discipline. These skills include but are not limited to airway management and respiratory support, invasive and non-invasive monitoring, cardiovascular support and resuscitation, and ethical issues related to these environments. Rural primary care physicians are often the first to respond to critical events in their practice. Prompt recognition and institution of life saving measures may determine their patient's ultimate survival and/or quality of life.
Methods to Achieve Objectives
Direct participation in all aspects of anesthetic management and care: operating room, recovery room, intensive care unit, conferences, seminars, simulation and rounds. Clinical experience is tailored to each student's educational needs and chosen specialty. Areas of specialization in Anesthesia include obstetric, pediatric, cardiovascular, neurosurgical, critical care, and pain management.
