STATUS: Elective

OBJECTIVES:

Patient Care:

  1. Complete a pertinent physical examination for the evaluation of skin disorders.
  2. Correlate history and physical findings, present a differential diagnosis and formulate diagnostic and/or treatment plans
  3. Perform or Observe common procedures used in diagnosing skin disorders.

Medical Knowledge:

  1. Identify common dermatological conditions
  2. Identify the likely causes of acne, psoriasis, rosacea, atopic dermatitis, verrucae, skin cancers and the mechanism(s) for each.
  3. Name at least 3 laboratory tests to evaluate cutaneous manifestations of systemic conditions

Practice-Based Learning:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to use peer-reviewed literature to effectively and cogently evaluate patient care practices and modify management plans appropriately based on the information.
  2. Demonstrate receptiveness to feedback provided during the rotation with appropriate modification of behavior to improve performance.

Communication Skills:

  1. Demonstrate effective communication skills with patients and families from different backgrounds and with course directors, colleagues and other dental and medical professionals.
  2. Gather the important information that is needed for the dermatological history and complete a history in the medical record

Students will demonstrate a commitment to patient care and learning by timeliness, responsibility for patients and sensitivity to diversity, inclusion and equitable care. 

Systems-Based Practice: 

Demonstrate an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context and system of health care and the ability to effectively call on system resources to provide optimal care for all patients.

METHODS TO ACHIEVE OBJECTIVES:

  1. Students are expected to participate in elective-related experiences for the entire elective. Learning opportunities may be available on the weekends and/or in evenings, and students will be encouraged to participate in those opportunities also.
  2. Students are expected to read the list of assigned resources and engage in learning opportunities, including but not limited to: Patient examination and treatment plan. Diagnostic techniques. Biopsy. Fungus exam. Minor surgery, cryosurgery. Conferences, rounds, pathology slide sessions.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURES AND EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Daily observation and oral presentations. Narrative Assessment.
