Obstetrics Night-Float

STATUS: Elective

Description

The elective is a 2 week or 4 week fourth year elective rotation to be spent entirely on labor and delivery. This rotation is a night-float rotation scheduled from 6 PM - 8 AM from Sunday through Thursday evenings. The rotation is designed to give the student maximum exposure to obstetric deliveries. The rotation is available on a case-by-case basis only, as determined by the course director.

Objectives

  1. The student will be involved performing and assisting vaginal deliveries and Cesarean deliveries.
  2. The student is expected to evaluate patients presenting to the triage area of Labor and Delivery.
  3. The student is expected to perform admission history and physical exam evaluations and to follow and manage laboring patients.
  4. The student will be directly supervised at all times by resident and/or attending physicians.

Methods to Achieve Objectives

The objectives will be achieved by actively participating in procedures occurring on Labor and Delivery.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURES AND EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Daily Observation by clinical preceptors will be the sole determining factor for the rotation grade.
