Objectives

This elective will introduce students to the specialty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Clinical and preventive aspects of occupational medical practice will be addressed, in particular, the ascertainment of workplace exposures and their relationship to illness or injury. Additionally, students will learn how to determine causation, evaluate ability to return to work and medically manage injured workers. Students will also learn how to evaluate a workplace hazard and collaborate with management and workers to effect changes to promote worker health and safety. Principles of epidemiology, toxicology, preventive medicine and health care administration will be used to make occupational health assessments.

  • Didactic sessions including classes related to MPH training
  • Occupational Medicine and other grand rounds
  • Clinic
  • Worksite evaluations when available (may require travel for the day)

Examination Procedures and Evaluation Criteria

Evaluation is based on participation in clinic and departmental activities.
