Metabolic Bone Disease

Objectives
- To learn the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of patients with osteopenia, osteoporosis, vitiamin D deficiency and other causes of low bone mass.
- To learn the evaluation and treatment of patients with inflammatory arthritis, including reading of x-rays and evaluation of laboratory tests.
- To learn the proper technique of joint aspiration and injection for a variety of arthritic conditions.
Methods to Achieve Objectives
The student will be directly supervised and participate in outpatient clinics as well as inpatient metabolic bone disease consults.
Examination Procedures and Evaluation Criteria
Daily observation. The student will see the patients with the preceptor and will be evaluated on their ability to take thorough histories, perform physical examination (especially musculoskeletal examination), and combining the data to develop an assessment and plan. The student will present one case with a review of the recent literature to the preceptor.
